Description
Learners are introduced to European imperialism with a reading and a presentation. Learners begin the project by evaluating movie clips on Next Vista for Learning for effective and ineffective qualities. Then, learners view theatrical movie trailers and evaluated them for effective and ineffective qualities. Learners brainstorm a plot for a possible movie based on events of European imperialism that took place in either India or China in the 19th century. Once the plot for their movie is approved, the group completes storyboards, and films/edits their video. Each group creates a website on Weebly or Wix to promote the movie, and designs a promotional movie poster using Adobe Photoshop.

- Describe the causes and reasons for success of “new imperialism".
- Explain the causes, effects, and methods for British rule in India, including the Sepoy Rebellion, Indian National Congress, and Muslim League.
- Explain the causes, effects, and methods for British rule in China, including the Opium Wars, Taiping Rebellion, Open Door Policy, and Boxer Uprising.
Technology
- Internet: viewing sample videos and trailers
- Google Documents: writing and submitting drafts of the movie plot with teacher feedback
- Camera: filming scenes for the trailer
- iMovie: producing and editing the movie trailer
- Weebly or Wix: creating a website to promote the movie trailer
- Adobe Photoshop: creating a poster that promotes the movie trailer
- YouTube: uploading videos of the movie trailer for viewing during class
Assessment
Learners were assessed on the following content and skills:
- Creates movie trailer, movie poster, and promotional website on imperialism in Indian or China
- Uses MLA formatting for a sources cited page
- Completes Kahoot quiz from each movie's website (based on historical information)
- Quiz/Test on European imperialism in the modern era
