iMovie (Periodization)

Description

Learners use an infographic to analyze the events that took place in the United States on Tuesday, September 11, 2001  Then, learners watch a video with interviews of Galloway faculty and staff about memories of the events of that day. (My first use of iMovie was to make this video.) After watching the video and engaging in a discussion about what changed due to the event, learners complete an activity to analyze periodization. Learners reconcile the different markers for historical periodization, what factors historians look at when marking periods, and how naming conventions for the periods give nod to the winning narratives of history. This exercise concludes an extended study of change and continuity over time.

Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of the project, learners will be able to:
  • Explain the significance of the events of September 11, 2001 and its impact on globalization.
  • Describe the task of historical periodization and why historians might mark these differently.

Technology
  • Camera: used to interview faculty and staff
  • iMovie: used to craft a movie from the recorded scenes and audio footage of the interviews and of the pictures

Assessment
Learners were assessed on the following content and skills:
  • Discusses the meaning of the events for Americans and how they would explain the event to their own children in 20 years
  • Explains why it marks a possible new period in historical periodization (commonly referred to as the "Era of Securitization")
  • Quiz/Test on globalization
